    Granny's Fried Green Apples

We used to go camping during the summertime. Our favorite camping place was beside a small creek shaded by wild apple trees. After the camp was set up and firewood gathered Dad would go check the apple trees, looking for any apples that were, in his opinion, ready to cook. (How long the apple trees had survived by this creek was unknown, but the apples were fairly small, green, and very tart.)

When Dad had enough apples he would bring them into camp, wash them in a pan with clean water, toss the water into the creek and turn the apples over to Granny so she could ply her magic.

    Ingredients

  • Find a wild apple tree and take enough to make a good skillet full
  • OR
  • Buy some good cooking apples such as Granny Smith
  • An iron skillet if cooking over a campfire
  • Some butter
  • Sugar and/or brown sugar (if available)
  • Cinnamon if desired or available
  • Instructions:

    1. Core and peel the apples

    2. Put a couple of tablespoons of butter into the skillet and set on the campfire grate or stove burner.

    3. Cut the apples into slices, trying to keep the slices about the same thickness.

    4. Place the apples into the skillet and a bit of sugar depending on how tart the apples are and cook until tender.

    4. When done add a bit of cinnamon if desired.

You can cook fried apples on the stove. Peel enough to fill a skillet and cook as above. If you have peeled and sliced more apples than will fit into the skillet, use a bigger one. Experiment with the sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon. Taste test until the apples appeal to your taste buds.

Don't taste test so much that there's no fried apples left for your family.
