Animal Heroes

Browse stories about animals who have acted heroically, who have saved the lives of humans and other animals. Read some of the stories below about ordinary animals who have acted in an extraordinary manner.

What Is A Hero? One definition of a hero is "one who is willing to make a personal sacrifice for the benefit of others." This doesn't really explain why some animals will save the life of another animal or a human, and I have not found an explanation of why some animals are heroes.

A Labrador Retriever named Penny
Brenda Owen was walking her dog, Penny, by the Elwy River in St. Asaph, Wales, when she spotted a wheelchair by the river bank. Spotting a woman floating in the water she yelled to the woman but got no response. She commanded Penney to "Fetch!" and Penny jumped into the water and dragged the unconscious woman to the edge of the river, where Brenda and a passing man resuscitated the woman and called for emergency help. Without Penny's help the woman may have drowned before Brenda or the passing man could have reached her.

Dog Saves Boy From Cougar
Austin Forman, an 11-year-old boy from a small town north of Vancouver, Canada, was fetching wood from the backyard in January 2010 when a cougar came out of the forest. Before the cougar could jump on the boy the family dog, Angel, a golden retriever, jumped to Austin's rescue. The cougar had Angel's head within her jaws, and they began to fight. Austin's family quickly called for assistance and were able to free the courageous golden retriever before she was severely hurt. Scarlet The Cat
Scarlett, a homeless calico, had been staying with her 4-week-old kittens in a garage that had been damaged in several fires. The shelter again went ablaze and one firefighter arrived on the scene to find Scarlett amidst her brood, terribly burned from having carried them out one by one.

Scarlett herself had been severely burned in the process of pulling her kittens from the fire. Her eyes were blistered shut, her ears and paws burned, and her coat highly singed. The majority of her facial hair had been burnt away. After saving the kittens she was seen to touch each of her kittens with her nose to ensure they were all there and alive, as the blisters on her eyes kept her from being able to see them, and then she collapsed unconscious. The weakest of the kittens, a white-coated, died of a virus a month after the fire. However, after three months of treatment and recovery, Scarlett and her surviving kittens were well enough to be adopted. The kittens were divided into two pairs and the pairs were given over for adoption to residents of Long Island. Scarlett herself was adopted by Karen Wellen of Brooklyn. Wikipedia

The Pig Who Saved Her Human
On the morning of 4 August, 1998, Jo Ann Altsman suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the floor. LuLu, a housebroken Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig, seeing Jo Ann collapse, cried for a moment then crashed through the doggy/piggy door, out of the yard and to a nearby road. When a car approached, Lulu would calmly walk out into the road and lay down in front of the oncoming vehicle. Finally a man stopped and followed the pig to the mobile home and called for an ambulance. Lulu is definitely a super heroic animal by putting herself in front of danger of being run over by a car in order to get the help her human needed.
