Take a look at the long grayish hair-like material that's draped over the branches of the tree making the tree look like a Halloween ghost tree. It's called Spanish Moss, but it's not Spanish and it's not moss, so what is it?
Spanish moss looks like little dead gray twigs that have been become stuck together in a web of some kind. Spanish moss is an epiphyte, a flowering plant, a plant that lives on trees and thrives in moist partially shady areas. Spanish moss, sometimes referred to as air plants, Florida moss, long moss, Spanish lace, Pele's hair, Spanish beard, tree hair, and graybeard, makes it own food and does not takes it's nutrients from the host tree. This moss does not normally damage the host tree but in some cases can over shade the leaves of a tree, or break the branches by weighing them down.
