Sourdough Starter Biscuits RecipeYou are a very lucky person if you have a mother, a grandmother, a friend, or a friend of a friend who has a sourdough starter and who would trust you enough to gift you with part of their starter.
If you cannot find starter that has been used and tenderly cared for, then you will need to find a starter recipe and make your own, but be aware that that there is a difference in the taste of biscuits made with old starter and new starter. The older the started the better the biscuits taste.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup starter 2 tablespoons oil 3/4 cup milk 1 1/2 cup self-rising flour 1. Pour the oil in a pan.
2. Put 1/2 cup of the flour on your bread board (or on your clean and dry counter).
3. Mix the starter, rest of the flour, and the milk in a bowl.
4. Place the bread mixture on the floured bread board or counter.
5. Knead a few times.Form the mixture into a roll (1 1/2 to 2 inches round, or so).
Squeeze off a biscuit-sized piece of dough from the end of the roll, flatten it slightly.
Roll (or dip both top and bottom) in the oil and set in a square or oblong baking pan.
Place the pan of biscuits in a cold oven and bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.
Serve warm with butter.* Take Care of Your Starter
While the sour dough biscuits are baking you need to take care of your starter.
Add 1/2 cup regular flour and 1/2 cup water to the starter and mix well. After letting the starter sit out all day (or all night), put the starter in the refrigerator. (I use a cheese cloth to cover the starter jar top) Let the starter sit out all night or all day depending on when you made used the starter. The starter will get watery on top, but do not drain off. Just mix it back in. If the starter is not used for 10 days, then add 1 teaspoon of sugar and mix well * Many, many years ago in a sunny and warm California community, I had a neighbor, Darlene Stephenson, who had lived in Alaska to be near her husband who was in the service. While there she was lucky enough to have been given a sourdough starter that was said to be near a hundred years old and had been passed down through the years from an Alaskan gold hunter.
Darlene graciously shared her starter and starter recipes with me and taught me how to take care of my precious sourdough starter.
Several years later I moved from California to a very small town in Colorado. Of course, I carried my starter with me in the car along with my two children. As we traveled into Colorado the weather turned very cold at night so the starter went into the hotel rooms at night with us. One particular cold night, I sat the jar of starter on a small table near the not - so - warm room heater to ensure it did not freeze.
One of the darkest days of my life was when was when I discovered my jar of sourdough starter missing after we had traveled hundreds of miles that next day.To the Food and Beverage Clip Art
