Many years ago my friend and neighbor came to tell me that she had driven her husband to the doctor because he had become weak while driving back from a day trip to Flagstaff, Arizona. She took over driving and drove immediately to their doctor's office when she reached Phoenix. Her husband could not get out of the car or walk by the time she reached the doctor's office. The doctor put her husband into a wheelchair and wheeled him next door to the hospital where he was admitted. He was diagnosed with Gillain-Barre.
A few weeks after my neighbor's husband came home from the hospital I found out that my cousin's husband had also been hospitalized with Gillain-Barre.Guillain-Barre is a rare disease which only occurs in one or two people out of 100,000. The disease was first recognized in 1859 and there is still no known cure for it. In 1931 Franklin D. Roosevelt was diagnosed with poliomyelitis, but a 3003 study shows that the President probably had Guillain-Barre.
