Typewriter art is created by using text characters, such as the key characters on typewriter keys or on your computer keyboard. The more common name for typewriter art is ASCII art and there are now commercial and freeware programs that will convert images to ASCII art.
My expertise at typewriter art is shown below. It's not very impressive, but you can recognize a smiling face and a frowning face if you tip your head sideways and look at the symbols.
It's really easy. All you have to do is strike selected symbols on the keyboard to draw a picture. Anyone can do it! While using only a typewriter or computer keyboard, do you think you could copy the picture below of the smiling lady?
It would seem to be an impossible task, right? But a man named Paul Smith re-created the famous Mona Lisa painting using this typewriter keyboard method. And he did it by using only one hand!
Paul Smith takes typewriter art to a whole new level. Born with severe cerebral palsy, Paul taught himself to create pictures on the a typewriter by using his left hand to steady his right hand to strike the symbols at the top of the numbers key. Paul never had a formal education and never learned to read or write but he not only became a typewriter artist wonder but also a great chess player.
The Paul Smith Foundation showcases his artwork and his story. Read About the Artist and view photos of Paul at work on his typewriter. You will need Quick Time on your computer to view the video clip s.
Browse the Gallery for Paul's amazing typewriter art of the famous Mona Lisa painting, his portrait of Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, and other famous people, plus animals, trains, Americana, tradition christian art, and more.
Paul Smith, although severely handicapped, found purpose in his life and is an inspiration to all of us to overcome whatever difficulties that may pop up in our lives and to never give up trying, learning, and overcoming.

Web clip art is clip art created for use on Web pages. This clip art has been created with pixels in GIF format for use as Web clip art. This Web clip art can, in some cases, be used for other purposes, such as scrapbooking, newsletters, or greeting cards, but changing the size of graphics created with pixels can cause image distortion. Shadowed images are for use on light or white backgrounds, while unshadowed images are for use on both light and dark background pages.
